The EORI number or Economic Operator Registration & Identification Number is used for importing and exporting goods between customs territories. The EORI number will need to be used with your customs declarations when shipping goods overseas
If you are a UK business with a UK VAT number, it is likely you already have a GB EORI number which was valid in Europe pre-brexit. Due to the UK leaving the EU it is now necessary to have an EU EORI number and a GB EORI number in order to transact exports from the UK and imports into the EU and vice versa. A Northern Ireland EORI number beginning with XI is an exception and can be used in both territories without the need to apply for an additional Economic Operator Registration & Identification Number.
You will need to use your EORI number when conducting any Import or Export from or to the UK or EU. Your goods will not be able to be cleared through customs without one and may be rejected and returned.
This all depends on the member state you wish to apply for your EORI number in. Generally you would apply where your main activity takes place but each country has different rules and processing times, only 1 EU EORI is permitted for use in the EU and usable across all member states.
