Flat Rate Scheme

The Flat rate scheme is structured for businesses who don’t make a high amount of purchases and don’t have the need to reclaim much VAT. It allows you to pay a much smaller VAT rate to HMRC on sales and allows you to keep the difference between the flat rate and the 20% rate.

If you are in your first year of being VAT registered under the scheme you also receive a 1% discount on the VAT paid. This is also different for limited-cost businesses.

Limited Cost Businesses

You’re classed as a ‘limited cost business’ if your goods cost less than either:

  • 2% of your turnover
  • £1,000 a year (if your costs are more than 2%)

This means you pay a higher rate of 16.5%.

If you are not a limited cost business, you use your business type to work out your flat rate using our handy table below.
