Efficient and streamlined service
I’ve been using VAT digital for 3 years now for all my EU VAT filings. I was with a bigger firm before them and I am very satisfied with the switch. They are very helpful, responsive (this was a major requirement for me) and accurate. Their prices are in line with the market or a little lower. Recommended!
What is VAT?
VAT means Value Added Tax. It’s a tax which require VAT-registered traders in Europe add to the price of their taxable sales and pay directly to the local tax authorities when they file their VAT returns.
Selling goods in a European country typically means you will be required to register for Value Added Tax (VAT) in the country you are selling in.
It is solely your responsibility legally to ensure you are compliant with all relevant tax laws in the countries you are conducting business in.
Do i need a VAT Number?
There are a number of reasons a business may require a VAT number in a different country to their own. If you are selling goods to a consumer in another country it is highly likely you require a VAT number and must be charging and collecting VAT. Some of the more popular reasons for registering for a VAT number is;
- Storing goods in the country
- Exceeding local thresholds
- Importing or Exporting
- VAT refunds
- Selling to consumers

Our FAQ answers the in-depth complicated questions you may have about VAT
How long does it take to get a VAT number?
Every country varies and it can take anywhere from 1 week to 12 weeks in busy countries such as Germany to get a VAT number so you should plan accordingly if you have any activity you are planning in the future.
Can I register myself?
It’s possible for EU businesses to register directly but not non-EU businesses, they must appoint an approved representative like VAT Digital to handle their VAT affairs when registering. Even as a EU business you may want to appoint a representative to make sure you comply with local tax laws and avoid potential hefty fines for non-compliance.
I sell on a marketplace, do I need a VAT Number?
Based on your selling activities you may or may not require a VAT number. The marketplace usually makes you aware of this. For non-EU businesses usually the marketplace would collect the VAT on your behalf avoiding registration unless you are storing goods in the country.
What if i have an IOSS number?
The Import One Stop Shop (IOSS) is only suitable for imported goods sold to consumers and valued under 150 EUR. If you sell any goods outside of these parameters it is likely you also need a VAT number.
